60 Months: The Their Own Workstation Stage

About a 5 minute read

Happy fifth birthday. Big one. If they can now make themselves breakfast, start to finish, with you doing basically nothing, take a second to actually clock that. That's five years of small handovers adding up to something real.

🍳 What's Actually Happening

By five, a child who's progressed through this guide is usually capable of managing a simple task with minimal supervision, a genuine and fairly significant milestone worth naming to them directly. The fixed spot at the table that mattered so much at 15 months evolves into something closer to a proper workstation, somewhere they prep, plate and present food largely on their own.

🧒 What This Looks Like Day to Day

Making something simple, breakfast's usually the easiest place to start, from start to finish with only light supervision. Gathering what they need, preparing it, serving themselves. A noticeably different level of independence than anything earlier in this guide.

🔬 The Research Behind It

Research into self-regulation and independent task completion finds that by around five, most kids have developed enough executive function, planning, sequencing, self-monitoring, to manage simple, familiar tasks with minimal external support, provided they've had consistent opportunity to build toward it.

🍽️ Try This: Breakfast, Solo

Set everything up the night before within their reach, and let them make their own breakfast the next morning without you in the kitchen. Watch from the doorway if you have to. You'll probably have to.

✅ What to Try This Week

- Let them manage a full simple task, start to finish, with only light supervision.
- Name the milestone directly. This one's genuinely worth acknowledging.
- Set up their space as a proper workstation, not just a place setting.
- Resist stepping in unless something's genuinely unsafe.

⚠️ Where Parents Tend to Go Wrong

Continuing to closely supervise at the same level as earlier stages, out of habit rather than necessity, and holding back a level of independence they're genuinely ready for.

🧡 How Kindy™ Fits In

If you've had KindyMat since 15 months, this is worth reintroducing, set up as a defined workstation rather than a place setting, everything they need already within reach. The same object that once marked "their seat" now marks "their station." Nice full-circle moment for a product that's been quietly working since year one.

If you don't have it yet, this is still a fine stage to bring it in, though by now it works best alongside KindyCook and KindyDine rather than on its own, together they make the whole workstation, not just the base.
